Alabama GOP Chairman Statement of the Death of Dr. Paul Hubbert

Paul Hubbert, former head of the Alabama Education Association, passed away last night at the age of 78. The cause of death has not been released, but it is known that Dr. Hubbert had been battling numerous life-threatening illnesses.

Under Paul Hubbert’s direction, the Alabama Education Association grew into one of the most influential political organizations in the state. Dr. Hubbert retired in 2012 and largely removed himself from public life.

He is survived by his wife Ann, his two daughters and numerous grandchildren.

ALGOP Chairman Bill Armistead expressed his condolences with the following:

“The state has lost one of its most influential leaders with the death of Dr. Paul Hubbert. My most sincerely condolences and prayers go out to Ann and the Hubbert family.

“Dr. Hubbert was passionate about serving the teachers of Alabama, and did so for more than forty years. The leadership he provided Alabama teachers and support personnel is unparalleled.

“Dr. Hubbert and I had our differences on issues from time to time when I served in the Alabama Senate. But, one thing I knew about Paul Hubert was that he was a man of his word and a true gentleman. He was the most pleasant adversary that I have ever encountered. He will be missed by friend and foe alike.”
