Secretary of State Beth Chapman is the only Secretary of State chosen among a group of elections officials from around the country who will participate in a roundtable discussion on best practices for veterans voting. The event, held Thursday in Washington DC, is sponsored by the Election Assistance Commission.
Secretary Chapman was chosen to participate in part for her program Veterans Who Vote, which she developed in 2008. Chapman created the Veterans Who Vote program to partner with the Veterans of Foreign Wars to recruit veterans to register voters, work at the polls, and be poll watchers for statewide elections.
“Veterans have fought to provide our right to vote, protect our right to vote and now they have an opportunity to help preserve our right to vote by being a part of the process,” Chapman stated. “There is no one better to trust managing and watching the polling places where we vote than the ones who fought for our right to vote and we must continue to encourage their participation.”
Secretary Chapman has been a strong state and national advocate for our nation’s military and their right to vote, including testifying before Congress on the issue. She also created and chaired Alabama’s Military and Overseas Voting Task Force. She has received numerous commendations from various military organizations including the highest national award given by the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
