The campaign of Dr. Larry Stutts for Alabama Senate District 6 continued building momentum Tuesday night as Stutts delivered a commanding victory over prolific debater and longtime incumbent Roger Bedford in their first and only debate.
“As our state senator, Roger Bedford has failed to deliver results, and tonight he failed to deliver adequate answers for the concerned citizens of our district,” Stutts said.
“Roger has spent years honing his speaking ability in Montgomery, but no amount of political rhetoric will be able to distract voters from the fact that he is Obama’s strongest ally in Alabama and his failure to fight for jobs here in the sixth district has cost our people dearly. Tonight he asked people to send him back to Montgomery because ‘the job is not done.’ On Election Day, voters of this district are going to let Mr. Bedford know that, after 32 years, they are tired of waiting for him to finish the job.”
Stutts, who has been compared with leaders such as Governor Robert Bentley and endorsed by U.S. Senator Jeff Sessions and Congressman Robert Aderholt, said his opponent’s efforts have begun to move into a mode of desperation. Over the past nine days alone, Bedford has spent nearly $100,000 in his struggle to maintain his more than 30-year political career.
“In Montgomery, there is no bigger political insider than Roger Bedford and I know he is going to continue to spend money on a barrage of ads attacking me and trying to fool voters,” Stutts said.
Alabama Republican Party Chairman Bill Armistead issued the following statement about the Stutts v Bedford race: “The people of Northwest Alabama are beginning to realize there has been no one more hostile to our job creators and economic growth than Roger Bedford. Last night the audience at the debate saw in Sen. Bedford a life long politician giving his calculated and rehearsed answers to the questions, as compared to the honest and straight forward responses in Dr. Stutts. Dr. Stutts made the case for conservative reforms and practical, attainable solutions that will allow this district to grow economically and continue to be a great place to live, work, and raise a family. I believe that on November 4, we will see that voters believe in that message and are ready to make a change.”
Dr. Stutts was clear that he and the Republican leadership in the state would be working closely together for the good of the district when he said, “I will be working closely with Governor Bentley to bring jobs to District 6, and with leaders like Senator Sessions and Congressman Aderholt to protect our Alabama values from the liberal agenda of the Obama administration.”
Stutts went on to cite lagging job creation numbers, as well as Bedford’s rating as one of Alabama’s least job-friendly senators and most liberal officials. These points, along with Stutts’s conservative positions and reputation as one of the area’s finest doctors, are driving many to shift support from Bedford to Stutts.
Stutts and his wife, Jackie, live in Tuscumbia where he serves as an elder at First Presbyterian Church. As a doctor, he has delivered more than 10,000 babies and his campaign pledges that “he will deliver” jobs, education and healthcare solutions and “conservative leadership with integrity for the district”.
