Results from tonight’s election show that Republicans have swept Alabama. Republicans maintained their super majority in both houses of the state legislature and again secured each of the ten statewide offices. Republicans have also been elected to six of the seven seats in the U.S. House of Representatives and U. S. Senator Jeff Sessions won re-election. Republicans continue to hold both of the U.S. Senate seats for Alabama.

ALGOP Chairman Bill Armistead made the following statements:
“What a great election year for Alabama and the nation! Thanks to all of the great Republican candidates who stepped forward this year. We had the best slate of candidates ever, and I know just how hard each of them worked during the election. I also want to thank the voters for doing their duty and heading to the polls this year. Because of you, Alabamians have a lot to celebrate tonight!
“Alabama has become one of the reddest states in the nation with Republicans sitting in eight of Alabama’s nine seats in the U.S. Congress. And, there is once again a Republican in every statewide office! ALGOP ran Republicans in 87 of the 105 State House seats and 28 of the 35 State Senate seats.
“The battle of the night was between Dr. Larry Stutts and Democrat incumbent Senator Roger Bedford, both vying for State Senate District 6. Dr. Stutts has defeated Sen. Bedford, and for the first time in decades Northwest Alabama will have a new senator. To top that, it is the first time ever Senate District 6 has elected a Republican.
“Dr. Stutts, a native of Colbert County, will also be joined in the Alabama Senate by fellow doctor Tim Melson of Lauderdale County. I am confident that with Senators Stutts and Melson representing northwest Alabama, the citizens in that area are going to see some great improvements in job creation and education.
“There are numerous firsts this election cycle we are extremely proud of! For the first time ever, a Republican was elected in Wilcox County when Republican James Emerson defeated Democrat Donald McLeod for Board of Education, District 1.
“Northeast Alabama is also becoming a Republican stronghold with the election of Tommy Hanes to House District 23 (DeKalb and Jackson Counties). Hanes defeated longtime Democrat incumbent Representative John Robinson. Northwest Alabama also elected a new Republican senator for Jackson, DeKalb and Madison Counties with the election of Steve Livingston to Senate District 8.
“The Alabama Education Association and other special interest groups pumped millions of dollars into Alabama elections this year, but the voters rejected their negative and blatantly false advertising against our Republican candidates. The AEA spent over $20 million of Alabama teachers’ money and have very little to show for it. It is hard to see how the AEA will survive as a major influence on legislation in Montgomery. Henry Mabry, AEA Executive Director, has done a terrible disservice to the teachers of this state by throwing millions of dollars in their dues away in hopes of defeating our conservative Republican legislators. I don’t see how he survives with this organization. If this were a private business, Mabry would have long been gone. I suspect that his tenure is about to end with the AEA.
“With the election of many new Republicans in the state, we can now experience real progress and reform within our state’s education system through the collaboration of a Republican led legislature and a Republican governor.
“Congratulations to our Republican victors on a job well done! We look forward to all you will accomplish.”
