Recently, I had the opportunity to have dinner with one of television’s most famous military men. You may know him from his more than sixty films, including his memorable performance in Full Metal Jacket, for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe Award. Perhaps you know him from his shows on the History Channel or a variety of television shows, including House and Scrubs. His voice has been used to create characters in the three Toy Story movies and even SpongeBob SquarePants. His name is R. Lee Ermey, America’s best-known Marine Gunnery Sergeant.
In real life, he served in Vietnam and performed two tours of duty in Okinawa, Japan. He served as a drill instructor at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, California and Parris Island, South Carolina. He was medically discharged for several injuries he incurred during his military service and received multiple commendations as well, including the Meritorious Unit Commendation, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal and the Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm. His experience with the military is not just in the past; he has been on many troop morale trips overseas and is very supportive of our men and women in uniform.
I was personally and professionally impressed with Gunny Sergeant Ermey. This tough-as-nails former drill instructor embodies the American spirit: hard work, dedication, and service to one’s country. He continues to encourage the support of our nation’s armed forces as they protect us around the world; something we all should keep at the forefront of our minds.
