On Saturday morning, Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia passed away at the age of 79.
Alabama Republican Party Chairman Terry Lathan made the following statement:
“The nation mourns the sudden loss of a conservative powerhouse. Justice Scalia’s unwavering commitment to uphold the Constitution will certainly be missed.Our history will show that Justice Scalia’s conservative viewpoint helped shape monumental moments in our nation’s history. His deep institutional knowledge of our Constitution and the understanding of the origin of the founders’ intentions guided his well thought out decisions.”
“The following quotes by Justice Scalia are examples of the consistent conservative policies upon which he based his decisions:”
- “More important than your obligation to follow your conscience, or at least prior to it, is your obligation to form your conscience correctly.”
- “One of the reasons God has been good to us is that we have done him honor -unlike the other countries of the world that do not even invoke his name, we do him honor in presidential addresses, in Thanksgiving proclamations, and in many other ways.”
- “Undoubtedly some think that the Second Amendment is outmoded in a society where our standing army is the pride of our Nation, where well-trained police forces provide personal security, and where gun violence is a serious problem. That is perhaps debatable, but what is not debatable is that it is not the role of this Court to pronounce the Second Amendment extinct.”
- “This Court, however, concludes that this limitation would prevent the rest of the Act from working as well as hoped. So it rewrites the law to make tax credits available everywhere. We should start calling this law SCOTUScare.”
