Chairman Lathan Comments on Governor Bentley’s State of the State Address

On Tuesday evening, Alabama Governor Bentley announced his 2016 plan, “Great State 2019.”

Alabama Republican Party Chairman Terry Lathan made the following statement:

“In his 2016 State of the State address, Governor Bentley spoke on several important issues that he plans to focus on for the remainder of his term as governor. This aggressive three-year plan, “Great State 2019″, encompasses topics such as education, rural healthcare needs, building new prisons and offering high capacity broadband technology to benefit hospitals, schools, and law enforcement.”

“Governor Bentley spoke with determination to advance education in Alabama. Topics such as teacher and school support personnel pay raises, further funding for Pre-K, using innovative reform to consolidate junior colleges resulting in scholarships for low-income students, are major components of his vision. With Alabama implementing school choice and charter schools, it is encouraging to continue along a path of raising the bar of education in our state.”

“The health and safety of Alabamians are another top priority in the governor’s plan. His proposal to improve health care in rural areas through tax credits and incentives to keep doctors from leaving these areas is vital to these communities. Additionally, it is only right for Governor Bentley to push back on the federal government when they ignore our concerns regarding refugees and their resettlement. Alabama has every right to participate in this conversation and I applaud the governor as he continues to demand information from an uncooperative White House.”

“The House has submitted a very strong conservative agenda, and we now look forward to hearing the Senate’s plans on Wednesday. Our lawmakers must now balance many challenging topics while remaining good stewards of taxpayer dollars.”

“The Alabama Republican Party will continue to praise the implementation of bold reforms while expecting conservative fiscal responsibility.”
