Candidate Spotlight – Week of September 8, 2014

FEDERAL CANDIDATE
Robert Aderholt

Congressman Robert Aderholt has represented Alabama’s 4th Congressional District since 1997. He is running for re-election and is looking forward to serving a tenth term in Congress. Congressman Aderholt currently serves on the House Appropriations Committee as the Chairman of the Agriculture, Rural Development, and Food and Drug Administration Subcommittee; and Vice-Chairman of the of the Commerce, Justice and Science Subcommittee; and as a member of the Defense Subcommittee.

Aderholt has been committed to bringing record levels of funding to Alabama for transportation projects, improving economic development and creating jobs for his district. Congressman Aderholt was responsible for introducing legislation to reinstate home health care when funding was cut by the federal government. He also introduced the “U.S. Steel Jobs Protection Act” to fight against the loss of steel industry jobs due to foreign steel dumping.

Congressman Aderholt’s father is Judge Bobby Aderholt, a well-loved and respected judge of the 25th Judicial Court of Alabama who sat on the bench for over 30 years. Aderholt’s father-in-law was former Agriculture Commissioner and State Senator Albert McDonald, who recently passed away.  His family has deep roots in the Alabama Republican Party and we are proud that he will continue to serve our state!

STATEWIDE CANDIDATE
Young Boozer

Young is seeking to be re-elected as Alabama’s State Treasurer; he was first elected in 2010. Born in Birmingham and raised in Tuscaloosa, Young and his family have lived in Montgomery for more than 25 years. Young earned a bachelor’s in Economics from Stanford University and a Master’s in Finance, Money and Banking from Wharton School of Finance.

As Alabama’s Treasurer, Young serves as a member of the National Association of State Treasurers Banking Committee and is a member of the College Savings Plans Network’s (CSPN) Executive Board. CSPN works to promote and enhance 529s and other college savings plans. His work in the CSPN Executive Board directly impacts the future education of our children.

Alabamians were awed by their Treasurer this summer at the annual C. Mac Johnson Farmers Market, when he was named the winner of the corn shucking competition. Young shucked 10 ears of corn in a matter of seconds! He claimed the victory would be his greatest accomplishment in his native-Nebraskan mother’s eyes.

In his first campaign for Treasurer in 2010, Boozer began his stump speech saying, “I’m Young Boozer, and yes, that’s my real name” and the ad closed with Boozer stating, “Young Boozer: funny name, serious leadership.” We may not see that ad again, however, as the Democrats didn’t qualify anyone to run for Treasurer.

We are glad for Young Boozer’s competitive edge and thank him for his first term as Treasurer. We look forward to another four years!

LEGISLATIVE CANDIDATE
Phil Williams

Senator Phil Williams was first elected to serve the people of District 10 (Etowah and Cherokee Counties) in 2010. That win against incumbent Democrat Senator Larry Means was a target victory that helped lead to the first Republican majority in 136 years. Senator Williams will once again face off against Means this November in the general election.

Senator Williams is currently the Chairman for the Alabama Senate Committee on Fiscal Accountability and Responsibility and the Vice Chair for the Committee on Ethics, Campaign Finance and the Constitution. He also serves as a member of the Committees for Judiciary, Agriculture, Veterans and Military Affairs, Taxation and General Fund Budgeting.

In addition to his duties as a senator, Phil practices law with his own law firm in Gadsden, Williams & Associates, LLC.  He is also Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel for TaxBreak, one of the only Alabama based Inc-500 companies. Prior to practicing law Phil was in full time ministry for seven years with the international youth outreach organization YoungLife.

Senator Williams stood out from the ranks during his first term in the Senate, leading the charge on many Republican issues. He was even named one of the Top 7 Most Conservative Legislators by political blog Yellowhammer. The people of District 10 have seen the difference a conservative leader can make in their community and are sure to re-elect Senator Phil Williams in November. We strongly support him and look forward to another victory!

Sheriff Ray Norris is seeking re-election in Clarke County. Ray defeated Democrat Virgil Chapman and Independent Ronnie Overstreet in 2010 with the promise to reorganize his county’s Sherriff office. Prior to being elected Clarke County Sheriff, Norris worked as a Clarke County deputy sheriff, city patrol officer, police chief, and investigator with the district attorney’s office for the Fourth Judicial Drug Task Force.

Upon being elected Norris said there were “too many chiefs and not enough Indians”. His conservative stance on small government spoke to the people of Clarke County. His commitment to service and continuous involvement in the community has gained him great support. The Alabama Republican Party stands behind Ray Norris in his race to victory!
