Candidate Spotlight – Week of September 29, 2014

CONGRESSIONAL CANDIDATE
Mo Brooks

U.S. Representative Mo Brooks was first elected to represent Alabama’s 5th Congressional District (Lauderdale, Limestone, Morgan, Madison and Jackson Counties) in 2010. This November, he is taking on independent Mark Bray in hopes of serving a third term in Washington. No Democrat qualified for the seat.

Representative Brooks currently serves on three important committees: Armed Services; Science, Space and Technology; and Foreign Affairs. He also founded and is the co-chairman of the Army Aviation Caucus. As the Representative of Huntsville, Brooks has dedicated his time in Washington to serving their best interests and improving the industries and quality of life for the people of the 5th District.

After graduating from the University of Alabama Law School in 1978, Brooks worked as a prosecutor in the Tuscaloosa District Attorney’s office and as a law clerk for Circuit Judge John David Snodgrass. In 1982, Brooks was elected to the Alabama House of Representatives and became one of only 11 Republican legislators. He was re-elected in the Alabama State House three times before being appointed Madison County District Attorney.

Mo Brooks has served the people of Lauderdale, Limestone, Morgan, Madison and Jackson Counties for almost four decades. The people he serves have been thankful for the success Brooks has had in Washington and are sure to re-elect him this November!

STATEWIDE CANDIDATE
Luther Strange

Since being elected Alabama’s Attorney General in 2010, Luther Strange has made protecting Alabama’s citizens his number one priority. He is seeking to be re-elected this November. His Democrat opponent Joe Hubbard has run a campaign funded by the Poarch Creek Indians and focused on slanderous attacks.

“Democrat Joe Hubbard’s campaign is almost exclusively funded by the Poarch Creek Indians, a tribe engaged in a lawsuit against my office and supported by Barack Obama’s and Eric Holder’s Justice Department,” Attorney General Strange recently noted. “Without a doubt, these gambling interests are attempting to buy their way out of a lawsuit by attempting to purchase the office of Attorney General.”

During his first term as AG, Luther has continuously stood up for the people of Alabama and their rights. He joined with AGs from across the country to stop the massive federal intrusion of ObamaCare, and he joined Alabama’s own EWTN, the world’s largest religious broadcasting company, to stop ObamaCare’s encroachment on our religious liberties.

Luther has worked with Alabama district attorneys and our law enforcement to investigate and prosecute crimes throughout our state. He has worked to make our schools, homes and communities safer.

Undeniably the tallest Attorney General in the country, Luther has committed himself to also being one of the best and hardest working Attorney Generals. The Alabama Republican Party is proud to have Luther Strange amongst its ranks and feels confident that the people of Alabama feel the same. We must all come together and push back against the lies of Joe Hubbard by voting to keep our dedicated, conservative Attorney General!

STATE HOUSE CANDIDATE
Doug Sherrod

Doug Sherrod is the Republican candidate for Alabama House District 28. Sherrod is running against Democrat incumbent Craig Ford in hopes of representing the citizens of Etowah County. Sherrod has pledged to keep Alabama’s government small, eliminate wasteful spending and do what he can to keep the overreach of the federal government at bay. He is a strong supporter of pro-life and pro-family agendas.

An advocate for small business, Sherrod has owned and operated TeleSystems, Inc. in Gadsden since 1988. With two decades of experience, Sherrod knows the struggles of small business owners and vows to help support them in the legislature.

Sherrod currently serves as a board member on the Etowah County Board of Education for Place 5. He has been a member of the board since 2010, and served as President of the Board last year. Of his time with the BOE, Doug stated, “During my tenure on the Board of Education we have accomplished so much with so little. Currently, we have three major building projects going on. I have been a part of saving taxpayers in Etowah County millions of dollars. We are also working on a Green Energy Project that will allow us to save even more dollars while providing our schools with new, energy saving equipment. I have come to love and appreciate everyone in the school system I serve.”

It is clear that Sherrod’s sense of passion and dedication to Etowah County would enable him to serve the district faithfully. “Families build communities, churches strengthen communities, communities build cities, cities build our state,” Sherrod explained, “It just doesn’t work the other way around. It is all about a foundation. You simply cannot construct a sound family, community, city or state from the top down.”

STATE SENATE CANDIDATE
Melinda McClendon

Melinda McClendon is the ALGOP candidate for State Senate District 29 (Dale, Geneva and Houston Counties). This November, Melinda hope to defeat independent incumbent Harri Anne Smith.

Melinda currently serves as the District 4 Commissioner for Houston County. In 1994, she founded The Sconyers Group in; a multi-service marketing and promotions firm, which she continues to operate today. With a marketing background and an entrepreneurial spirit, McClendon has helped market and grow businesses around the southeast for more than 25 years.

Inspired by her desire to get young voters interested in the political process, Melinda developed Turn Right, a grassroots organization dedicated to educating and motivating today’s youth about the dangers of voter apathy.

Faced with life issues that some would consider obstacles, McClendon has risen above the challenges of both raising a child with special needs and beating Stage III Breast Cancer to instead becoming a fierce advocate for both. Her fighting spirit is proof positive that she will defend conservative rights against the Democratic push to control our lives.

The Alabama Republican Party places its full support behind this warrior and small-business owner in her quest to replace Harri Anne. Melinda will bring a breath of fresh air to the State House and will use her decades of leadership experience to improve the lives of the people of her district and Alabama.
