TAMPA, FL – When RNC Chairman Reince Priebus gaveled the 2012 Republican National Convention to order at 2 p.m. on Monday, he started a “debt clock” that would measure increases in the federal debt during the convention’s four days. When he stopped that clock as the convention drew to a close Thursday night, the federal debt had increased by $8,539,526,393.07.
“Barack Obama is running up debt almost as fast as he’s running out of excuses,” said RNC Chairman Reince Priebus. “He is drowning our children in a sea of red ink and ensuring that the next generation will not be better off.”
“Nevertheless, help is on the way. On Day One of his presidency, Mitt Romney will send legislation to Capitol Hill that will cut discretionary spending by 5 percent across the board. The $20 billion down payment on a balanced budget will set the stage for a brighter future for our children and grandchildren.”
