District Attorney Doug Valeska has served as District Attorney for Houston and Henry Counties as a Democrat since 1987. Valeska announced Wednesday afternoon that he will run for re-election in 2016 as a Republican.
Chairman Bill Armistead had the following comment regarding District Attorney Doug Valeska’s decision to switch parties:
“I am delighted that District Attorney Doug Valeska has officially announced his affiliation with the Republican Party. He will be welcomed into the Alabama Republican Party with open arms. I also know that the Houston County Republican Party, under the leadership of Chairman John Gormley, has long wanted Mr. Valeska to make this move and are excited that the time has now come.
“I have personally known and worked with Mr. Valeska for over 20 years and know that his values and conservative philosophy are what the Republican Party stands for. He has always served as a conservative Democrat but he realized, as have most conservative Democrats have come to understand, there is no place in the Democrat Party for conservatives. When the Democrat Party attempted to take God out of their platform at their National Convention in 2012, they sent a strong message to conservatives that they are no longer welcome in the Democrat Party.”
