Thursday afternoon, the U.S. Senate voted to confirm Gina Haspel as the CIA’s first female director.
Alabama Republican Party Chairman Terry Lathan made the following statement regarding the confirmation:
“Congratulations to Gina Haspel on being confirmed as the first female director of the Central Intelligence Agency. A well-respected 30-year veteran of the CIA and the recipient of several awards including the prestigious George H.W. Bush Award for Excellence in Counterterrorism, Ms. Haspel is extremely qualified for this role. As Director of the CIA she will play a key part in countering terrorists that threaten to upend the security of the United States.”
“Optimistically recommended for this position by three former CIA directors, it is embarrassing that 87% of Democrats, including Senator Doug Jones, voted not to confirm Ms. Haspel. It is shameful that they continue to obstruct nominees in these most important positions in our nation’s government.”
“We appreciate every Republican, including Senator Richard Shelby, that supported Ms. Haspel’s confirmation. Through this confirmation process, President Trump and the GOP’s top priority has remained clear: protecting America. We are confident that as the CIA’s top leader Gina Haspel will always put America first and strongly focus on the safety of our nation.”
