ALGOP Qualifying for Alabama House Special Elections Opens July 17

Qualifying for the Alabama Republican Party Special Election Primaries in Alabama House of Representatives Districts 16 and 55 will open on Monday, July 17, 2023 at 8:30 a.m. CDT. The qualifying period will end on Tuesday, July 25, 2023 at 5:00 p.m. CDT, per Governor Kay Ivey’s proclamations.

Anyone wishing to qualify for the Republican ballot can do so on-line at www.algop.org or in person at ALGOP headquarters (3505 Lorna Road, Birmingham, AL 35216) during the qualifying period.

The seat in House District 16 covers portions of Jefferson, Tuscaloosa, and Fayette Counties. It became vacant when Rep. Kyle South became the President and CEO of the Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama.

House District 55 is located in Jefferson County. The seat became open when Rep. Fred Plump resigned after pleading guilty to federal wire fraud conspiracy and obstruction of justice charges.

The Special Election Primary for both seats will be held on Tuesday, September 26, 2023. If a run-off election is needed, it will be held on Tuesday, October 24, 2023. The General Election will take place on January 9, 2024.
