Today the Alabama Republican Party released the first public polling measuring the support of cutting the grocery tax in the State of Alabama, and gives a snapshot of where the citizens of Alabama currently stand on this issue.
The survey comes after recent calls from ALGOP Chairman John Wahl and Lt. Governor Will Ainsworth to give taxpayers a break on their groceries. There has been growing support among Republican lawmakers for the tax cut.
The poll asked 1,610 registered voters across the State of Alabama their opinion on several issues. Of those with an opinion on the grocery tax, a whopping 83% wanted to see the tax eliminated, while only 49% supported a tax rebate also under consideration. When offered the choice of either cutting the grocery tax or receiving a rebate check, voters preferred the tax cut by a margin of nearly 4:1.
Cutting the grocery tax is extremely popular across party lines, with 70% of Republicans, 70% of Democrats, and 69% of Independents surveyed in support, and the rest either opposed or undecided. When asked to choose between the tax cut or a rebate check, Republicans, Democrats, and Independents once again chose eliminating the grocery tax by overwhelming margins.
The poll was conducted by the Alabama Republican Party, and surveyed 1,610 respondents from a random stratified selection of registered voters across the State of Alabama. The sample consisted of 31% Democrats, 58% Republicans and 11% Independents, and has a Margin of Error of +/- 3.2%.
