BIRMINGHAM – Today marked the close of qualifications to run for Alabama House District 53. The seat opened following the passing of Representative Demetrius Newton in September of this year. The Special General Election will be held on Tuesday, January 28, 2014.
Willie (W.A.) Casey, a resident of Birmingham, was the sole Republican to qualify for the seat. As such, W.A. Casey will move on to the Special General Election next year. Casey is a real estate broker and deacon of the historical Sixteenth Street Baptist Church. Casey was a member of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean War. W.A. Casey has been a small-business owner for many years and is heavily involved in his local community.
