Republicans Maintain Control of Jefferson County Commission

Republicans pulled off a big win in Tuesday’s special election for Jefferson County Commission District 5, beating back a serious challenge from Democrats who were hoping to gain control of the County Commission.

Unofficial election results released by the Jefferson County Board of Registrars have former Alabama Supreme Court Justice Mike Bolin winning the district with 59% of the vote, and Democrat megadonor David Silverstein receiving 41% of the vote. Candidate Jeff Wise, who dropped out just before Election Day and endorsed Bolin, received less than 1% of the vote.

“I want to congratulate Mike Bolin on his impressive win for Jefferson County Commission. This was not just a decisive victory for Commissioner Bolin, but also for Republicans across Alabama. This special election was the deciding factor in Republicans maintaining control of the Jefferson County Commission, and we are proud to see a strong Republican win this seat,” said Alabama Republican Party Chairman John Wahl.

“We are looking forward to seeing Mike Bolin’s conservative leadership go to work for the people of Jefferson County. He is a great public servant who will work tirelessly to protect and defend the people of his District. I also want to thank the campaign team and volunteers that went door to door, made phone calls, and helped make this victory possible,” he continued.

The vacancy in Jefferson County Commission District 5 was created when former Commissioner Steve Ammons stepped aside to take over the Birmingham Business Alliance as its CEO.

The district includes portions of Vestavia Hills, Hoover, Homewood, Mountain Brook, Irondale, and Leeds.
