Following a historic sweep of both local and legislative races across northwest Alabama by the Republican Party, former U.S. Senator and 2012 Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum issued the following statement through the Alabama Republican Party:
“First, thank you to the people of Alabama for the victory they gave me in the Republican Presidential Primary in Alabama in 2012. It was during that campaign that I got to know Alabama Republican Party Chairman Bill Armistead and the good work he was doing on behalf of the Party in Alabama. When he explained his plan to bring northwest Alabama into the Republican column, I was eager to help him. I was pleased to learn our efforts in 2012 led to the election of the first Republican in Colbert County, when Colbert County Republican Party Chairman David Black was elected to the County Commission.
“When Chairman Armistead contacted me in 2013 to ask that I once again help the Alabama Republican Party build upon its 2012 success, I was glad to come to Tuscumbia as the guest speaker for the first ever political rally hosted by the Alabama Republican Party in northwest Alabama. When I spoke to the rally of over 300 in September 2013, I knew great things were about to happen for the Republican Party in that part of the state. There was incredible passion and energy for conservative principles there.
“I congratulate Chairman Bill Armistead and all of the Republican candidates, county committees and volunteers in northwest Alabama for leading the party to such historic victories this year. The party’s concerted efforts in northwest Alabama paid off with the election of two Republicans to the Alabama Senate and a Republican to the Alabama House. I especially want to congratulate Sen. Larry Stutts on his victory in being elected to Alabama Senate District 6, which has been held by a Democrat for over 100 years. Picking up this Senate seat was always a priority for Chairman Armistead, but most thought it was next to impossible.
“Republicans were elected from the courthouse to the statehouse in record numbers in northwest Alabama. I am honored to have played a small role in the transitioning of northwest Alabama from a solid Democrat area to a Republican-leaning area. Voters all over America are realizing that the Republican Party best represents hard working families and the values and freedoms we hold dear.”
