Rich Wingo of Tuscaloosa is this week’s Rising Republican Star. Originally from Elkhart, Indiana, Rich moved to Alabama in 1974 when he was recruited by Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant to play for the University of Alabama football team. Rich was part of the famous “Goal Line Stand” in the 1978 Sugar Bowl when Alabama defeated Penn State.
Following his graduation from the University of Alabama in 1978, Rich was a linebacker for the Green Bay Packers in the NFL for seven years. Rich was named the Green Bay Packer 1979 MVP, Green Bay Packer Rookie of the Year and the 1984 Green Bay Packer NFL Man of the Year.
>>>At the completion of his professional football career, Rich began coaching at the University of Alabama. Rich coached for two years before taking over as President of AGI Baker Real Estate. Rich developed shopping centers while at AIG and is currently developing commercial real estate for Blackwater Resources.
In the June primary election, Rich ran for the Alabama House in District 62. The district covers Tuscaloosa County and parts of the surrounding counties. The seat was left vacant when Representative John Merrill decided to run for Secretary of State. Rich won the Republican nomination and the seat, since a Democrat did not qualify to run against him in the general election. The Alabama Republican Party congratulates Rich Wingo on becoming one of Alabama’s newest Representatives! We are confident he will successfully serve his district.
Rich and his wife Cheri have been married for 34 years. Together they have two sons, Jake (28) and Luke (20).
