ALGOP – RNC Votes to Oppose Common Core, Inappropriate Overreach

Los Angeles, CA – Today, the Republican National Committee meeting in Los Angeles voted to oppose the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), stating that they “…do not believe in a one size fits all approach to education and support providing broad education choices to parents and children at the State and local level.”

The resolution adopted by the committee goes on to say, “(The) Republican National Committee recognizes the CCSS for what it is– an inappropriate overreach to standardize and control the education of our children so they will conform to a preconceived ‘normal…’

In February, the Alabama Republican Party State Executive Committee voted in support of a resolution opposing CCSS.

Upon the passage of the resolution today, ALGOP Chairman Bill Armistead praised the vote of the RNC. Armistead said, “The RNC has just backed up what we have been saying in Alabama, that the Common Core Standards are bad for our children and are a gross overreach into the lives of Americans by the federal government.

“We do not need the Obama Administration to tell us how to educate school children in Alabama. Therefore, I am calling on the Alabama Legislature, once again, to stand up to this overreach by the federal government and support HB254 and SB190 which reverses the State School Board of Education’s decision to implement CCS in Alabama.”

Alabama National Committeewoman for the RNC Vicki Drummond said, “At least twelve states have come together with Alabama to fight more intervention in our lives from the federal government.  CCSS is promoted by the federal government and supported by President Obama.

“Alabama and co-sponsors believe that state, local and parental involvement best serves the children of Alabama. The minds and future of our Alabama children are non-negotiable.”

Alabama National Committeeman for the RNC Paul Reynolds said, “We looked at Common Core through two basic concerns; unintended circumstances and extended circumstances.  It is the extended circumstances that bothered me the most. Creating a national standard carries with it the power to regulate nationally. Alabama knows what Alabama children need to be taught, not a panel of ‘experts’ in Washington or on the West Coast.

“Alabama may choose to teach some of the same curriculum that Common Core proposes, but that should be Alabama’s decision, not a one size fits all concept that is dictated to us.”
