Time for the Grownups to Take Charge

Dear Friend,

The Republican National Convention this past week clearly defined the America that Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan want as compared to what Barack Obama and Joe Biden have in mind. The contrast between Romney and Obama could not be more apparent. We have great presidential and vice presidential nominees and we must do all that we can to ensure that Obama/Biden do not get another term.

This was the fifth GOP Convention that I have attended and I can honestly say that the enthusiasm in Tampa was more than I have seen at any previous Convention.

And Alabamians played a prominent role throughout the convention.

The CEO of the RNC Convention was Alabamian Bill Harris, who was a former Chairman of the Alabama Republican Party. This was the third convention where he served as CEO and everything went off without a hitch. We couldn’t be more proud of Bill and the job he did.

Alex SchriverThe Chairman of the College Republican National Committee, Alabamian Alex Schriver, spoke eloquently to the convention and on national TV. Alex is a national leader of the party and watch for him to take on an even larger role within the GOP in the future.

Then, there was former Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, who is a Birmingham native. From all of the feedback that I have heard, she gave one of the best speeches at the convention. She is no doubt a recognizable national figure and will likely play a key role in a Romney Administration.

Former Alabama Democrat Congressman Artur Davis gave a rousing speech as to why he left the Democratic Party and his long time friend, Barack Obama. Davis received a thunderous reception at the convention and his speech was seen by many as one of the best of the convention.

The much anticipated speech by Governor Mitt Romney did not disappoint anyone in Tampa. He gave a plan for American energy independence by taking full advantage of our own resources. He promised to cut the deficit and put American back on track to a balanced budget. And he affirmed the necessity to champion small businesses by lowering their tax burden, simplifying regulations and repealing and replacing Obamacare.

Ann Romney did a fabulous job in telling the world about the love shared between she and Mitt and their five sons and their families. If you haven’t yet watched her speech, I encourage you to take a few minutes and do that now.

There was no doubt in anyone’s mind that Governor Romney had picked the perfect Vice Presidential Candidate in Paul Ryan. Ryan promised the country that he and Romney would not duck the tough issues and they would not blame others. They are ready to take responsibility and lead us back to prosperity, applying the founding principles that made our country great. What an inspiring speech!

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie provided the keynote speech at the Convention and did a great job, outlining the clear differences between an Obama presidency and a Romney presidency. In true Christie fashion, his delivery was sharp with no-holds-barred. Again, I encourage you to take a few minutes and watch his speech.

Senator Marco Rubio gave the nominating speech and brought the house down with a well-thought out and delivered speech that fully set the stage for the man of the hour – our next President of the United States, Mitt Romney!

Then there was the ‘mystery speaker’ touted all week turned leaving everyone guessing who it might be.  Of course, it was none other than the incomparable actor Clint Eastwood. His quirky presentation was an entertaining interlude and well received from the audience in attendance in Florida.

Alabama sent 50 delegates, 47 alternates and many guests to the convention. ALGOP hosted a  a breakfast each morning for our group where we had some of the most prominent speakers at the convention joining us.  Some of the VIP Republicans who joined us for breakfast at our hotel included:  Gov. Chris Christie (NJ); Gov. Scott Walker (WI); Gov. Rick Perry (TX); Texas GOP Senate nominee Ted Cruz;  former Gov. John Sununu (NH); former Senator Rick Santorum (PA); former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice; future first son Tagg Romney; former Senior Advisor and Deputy Chief of Staff for President George Bush Karl Rove;  RNC Convention CEO Bill Harris;  RNC Chairman Reince Priebus; RNC Co-Chairman Sharon Day; RNC Political Director Rick Wiley; Weekly Standard Editor and Fox News Contributor Fred Barnes;  Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach; and Martin Callanan, the leader of the Conservative Party in the European Parliament.

Chairman Priebus noted in his remarks to us that we had far more speakers – sixteen in all – coming to visit with us than any other state. Most states only had 3 or 4 speakers all week and we were proud to claim the record we set for having not only the most speakers but the top tier speakers. My goal for this convention has always been to make it the most memorable and enjoyable convention ever for Alabama delegates, alternates and guests.

A special treat for the delegation was to have one of the most popular Republicans in the country staying in the hotel with the Alabama Delegation – Florida Sen. Marco Rubio. It was quite a treat to be able to visit with Sen. Rubio in the lobby of the hotel as he was coming and going. Many of our delegates and guests had the opportunity to visit with Sen. Rubio at our hotel on Thursday night after the Convention closed. He had his wife and children with him. Having visited with Sen. Rubio several times last week, I can tell you that he is as real and he seems on TV. Most impressive was the fact that he never seemed rushed and always had time to look you in the eye and talk to you. I have no doubt that he will one day be President Rubio.

The week in Tampa was exciting, but now it’s time to get to work! It is vital that each of us does everything we can to make sure that Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan are victorious on November 6th. You can make a difference!

We recently announced that ALGOP was going to adopt the three southern states (FL, NC and VA) that voted for Obama in 2008 to insure that they don’t vote for Obama this year. We cannot win the presidency if we lose these states. We have organized Alabama’s Battleground Patriots for the purpose of going to these states in October to help the Romney campaign win these states. To this end, we need your help.

Please consider volunteering to go on one of these trips and/or make a donation to ALGOP Patriots to assist us in paying for in transportation and housing costs associated with these trips. We will never forgive ourselves if we lose this election and didn’t do everything we could to help our neighboring states to vote for Gov. Romney in November.  Please do your part today!
