Groundhog Day: Democrats and Hypocrisy

Birmingham, AL – The word “hypocrisy” is defined as “an act or instance of such falseness,” however one may also add: “promises from Alabama Democrat Legislators.”

Last week, Senate Democrats held a press conference to introduce legislation that they claimed would require all government contracts to be bid, however, as the Montgomery Advertiser points out HERE, their actions fell far short of their words. The bill that Democrats have offered includes only those contracts which fall under the Executive Branch, a move that would protect no-bid legislative contracts, of which the majority has grown very fond.

While the fact that Democrats are offering empty rhetoric comes as no surprise, the explanation of this blatant omission proves that the majority has no shame. Senate Democrats claim that language protecting their no-bid contracts was a mistake and that they “didn’t catch that.” Sure.

“We saw this with the 2006 failed covenant, and now Democrats are offering more of the same during the 2010 election cycle, hypocrisy and words- all in the name of politics,” remarked Rep. Mike Hubbard (R-Auburn), Chairman of the Alabama Republican Party. “Democrats obviously want the people of Alabama to believe that they are born again on ethics reform, but in this case, the devil is in the details – another broken promise by the majority.”

Unfortunately Democrats have a solid record on excluding themselves from regulations that will increase transparency in government. In 2005, for instance, Democrat Senator Zeb Little sponsored legislation that excluded legislators from the Open Meetings Act – wonder why Democrats like Zeb Little don’t want the public to know what goes on behind closed doors in Montgomery?

“The Democrats have a clear and consistent record when it comes to increasing transparency in government – they’re all for it, unless it impacts them. The people of Alabama deserve better,” Hubbard added.
